Upcoming Events

We had a good committee meeting yesterday and have a good plan to move forward with some activities virtually until we can meet as a group again.  Please read this entire e-mail as there are a few action items on here.

Patrol Meetings:

  • March 30th--Troop meeting CANCELED
  • March 29th--First Aid Merit Badge will be held virtually.  Click HERE to access the VTC or by phone: +1 (877) 858-8898; pin 898637213# 
  • April 6th--Virtual Patrol Leaders Council.  PLC will focus on how Patrol Meetings will run in the month of April.
  • April 13, 20 and 27 will be virtual Patrol Meetings.

Troop Activities:

  • April 17th-- Cookoree--CANCELED
  • April 25th--Muddy Branch Cleanup--CANCELED
  • SPL camping, Quehanna backpacking, Mallows Bay and Saunders beach house in May/June are still moving forward as scheduled at this time.
  • Tomorrow is the last day to vote on what activities you want to do on the Saunders Beach house trip.  Click here to vote.
  • Summer Camp and Philmont are still moving forward as scheduled at this time.

Merit Badges and Advancements:  We are encouraging scouts to continue to work on Merit Badge workbooks and study for advancements.  We are setting up a way for Scouts to be able to complete Merit Badges and Rank Advancements virtually while continuing to have two-deep leadership.  Once Scouts complete all their requirements for rank we can set up Scoutmaster Conferences and then Boards of Review.  More info to come.

Troop t-shirts:  We are starting orders for new Troop t-shirts and ask them to be submitted by April 20th.  You can get Ladies, Youth or Men's sizes.  They are a moisture wicking material and we encourage both scouts and adults to consider getting them.  Some people may want to get two so there is a second one for summer camp and camping trips when one gets dirty.  The cost is $20 and the order form is attached.  Please complete the form and enclose a check to "Troop 239" and mail to Amanda Ryland, 414 Lynette Street, Gaithersburg, MD 20878.

Mallows Bay Payment:  The cost for Mallows Bay will be $112 per Scout and $95 per adult and we ask that the balance be paid by April 20th.  This cost will include kayak tour, food, camping and travel.  There are two people bringing their own kayak and they can subtract $20 per person from the total.  Please complete a check to "Troop 239" and Amanda at the above mailing address.

Hi Troop 239 PLC,
Welcome back to Troop Activities...    We are going virtual..   We don't want to loose this time.   Go to the troop website and click on the April 6th meeting.   I phone number and link will be provided for you to participate in this meeting. 
I'm sending this message to the Troop so all members should send their ideas for troop meetings or merit badges to your Patrol Leader (Veronica and Tilly) or Assistant Patrol Leaders (Victoria and Grace).  Get your ideas to your leadership.  They need your input. 
We are going to have a PLC meeting and we need need everyone to participate.

While you have some down time, I would like all members of the PLC to identify what Merit Badges you would like to work in April through virtual meetings.   So far the group has three Merit Badges in progress.
1) First Aide
2) Cooking
3) Personal Fitness
What do you want to do next?   Family Life (required eagle merit Badge), while your home this is a good one to start working.
What other badges/activites do you want to plan for April.   Virtual yoga class, exercise, etc.? 
Bring your ideas, I will be asking that each of you present your ideas at the April 6th meeting.
In additiion, I need to know the results of the survey for the June trip to the Saunders Beach house.  We need to get the top selections to Mr. Saunders.
It's important to remember that while we are working in an vitural environment, we must have two deep leadership (two adults on all communication) at all times.   So you have to include two adults (a parent, scoutmaster, or Assitant Scoutmaster, etc.) on any communications or video conversations.

Dear Troop 239 Members:

In an overabundance of caution, and with the recent events in our community with Montgomery County closing all Public Schools and School facilities (including tracks and fields), Community Centers, and Park/Recreational Centers due to the corona virus, the in person race scheduled for Saturday, March 21st, is officially cancelled

However, we feel that now more than ever everyone needs something positive to help them through this season, so we are transitioning this year's Be T.R.U.E. 5K run/walk to a virtual race and raffle for all REGISTERED participants.  As you can image, there are many details to work to make this transition and we will be coordinating a packet pickup date for the gift bags/raffle numbers and race shirts.   

We will post an update with the instructions for the virtual event as soon as we have all the details coordinated.   If you want to participate in the virtual event we will continue to let people register at http://swracereg.org/ for the virtual event.  

We will provide awards to Wootton Students this year thanks to your support this year.  Thanks to your amazing support, we are making a difference in teen’s lives today. 

Please stay safe, wash your hands, and together we will support each other during this time of uncertainty.

Upcoming Meetings and COVID-19

Thanks for everyone's help yesterday with mulch.  All the help made it so we finished nice and early. 

We wanted to push out a bit of information in regards to COVID-19.  With Maryland Schools closed through March 27th we are having to modify how we operate as far as Troop meetings until then.  Below is a tentative schedule and changes.  We may have to adjust based on how things develop.  Below is what we know for now.

  • 3/15 Skating MB -- Canceled
  • 3/21 Sam Williams 5k -- TBD if event will occur
  • 3/23 outside Patrol Meeting -- Canceled
  • 3/25 Committee Meeting -- Will likely be held via teleconference


NCAC has canceled District and Council level activities through April 30th, and has recommended the same for individual Troops. We will discuss how the Troop will handle events after the March 27th during the Committee Meeting on March 25th.  

We highly recommend that Scouts use some of this down time to study for requirements and work on some Merit Badge workbooks.  We will see how we can possibly use technology to hold virtual meetings.  At this time both Summer Camp and High Adventure Camps are unaffected.

Mulch Tomorrow

Just a few reminders about mulch tomorrow.

  • Sign-in is at the dispatch table from 7-8am
  • No parking in the church lot.  Park on Tern drive via Jones Lane and only park on just one side of the street.
  • 8am is the MANDATORY safety brief
  • Breakfast and lunch will be provided
  • Wear clothes you can get dirty, pants and sensible shoes (do NOT wear class A uniform).  Work gloves if you have them.
  • Be prepared for weather
  • Bring a water bottle with your name on it

With all of the news and changing status of schools and scouts due to corona virus, we thank you for being flexible as we figure out how this affects our Troop. 
As we have 7,700 bags of mulch in a parking lot, we will still be delivering mulch on Friday and Saturday. With that being said, please use your good judgment as to what is best for you and your family. 
  • If you have a cold, please do not come; you are excused.  We will send you home, if you show up.
  • If you are in a high-risk group, please do not come you are excused.
  • If you are not comfortable coming, please do not come, you are excused.
We are working to reduce the spread of germs. During the day, we will keep people in the same groups, have parent work the water refill station, and creating a handwashing station outside.
We will still have food at mulch, and the food committee is taking extra precautions to keep everyone safe. Precautions include: eating in shifts, only food servers handling food, all scouts must wash their hands and individually wrapping food . But, if you feel more comfortable you are of course welcome to pack your own food.
NOTE:  Please bring a chair so you can eat outside, a hat to keep off the sun, and a lot of water to drink.
Troop Meetings 
Maryland schools are closed through March 27th.  We have canceled troop meetings for those 2 weeks as well as March 30th. Our next Troop meeting is tentatively scheduled for April 20, 2020, we will be reevaluating the status of schools and activities at the beginning of April to determine if this date should change.
Other Events
NCAC has canceled activities through April 30th, and has recommended the same for individual Troops.  We are considering this guidance and working to determine the status of events beyond Mulch. We will send out an email next week we know more.
